The North Side gang vs. the South Side gang!
Reminiscent of the Al Capone, Bugs Moran days of 1929 Chicago, our politicians never fail to take every opportunity to fire what they hope is a lethal shot at a member of the other gang. Their motives are exactly the same as they were in 1929—securing the current territories (reelection), acquisition of new territory, money, and power. The parties should award their members battle or campaign ribbons for victorious engagements with the enemy. Sharpshooter medals would certainly be appropriate for bagging a member of the other party. Just think, these medals could be displayed below the left shoulder similar to the military service decorations. Our politicians could proudly wear the awards for their society-dividing activities around the Crapitol, at social events, and formal party functions.I don’t know what the exact percentages are but I would guess our society is divided into three political groups, Democrats 33%, Independents 34%, and Republicans 33%. Since the two major parties comprise 66% of the population and their supporters would never vote anything but a straight party ticket, the Independents are constantly exposed to political gunfire!The parties are subdivided into several factions. The Democratic Party is controlled by a minority group, “left-wing liberals”. The Republican Party’s minority group, “right-wing conservatives” is at the helm. Even though the majority of both parties are more moderate than the radical factions controlling them, the moderates cannot get together and take control as they should. The result is the radical 10-15% of both parties are able to nominate an extremist as their party’s Presidential candidate. Voters are given a choice between Tweetle Dee and Tweetle Dum to become President of the United States. The Independents go immediately into a state of shock when the party candidates are anointed. Once elected the President has 33% of the population doing everything they possibly can to make the new Caesar look bad (the opposite party), as well as a dumbfound segment of the Independents. These numbers can easily exceed 50% so harmony is never achieved. Why, you got it—reelection, acquisition, money, and power! The ultimate goal of these minorities is to impose their ideals on our society, get their candidates elected, increase their number of seats in Congress, and control the cash. This is insane! It has been estimated a serious contender for the throne must have $100 million in his or her war chest just to enter the arena. Hmm…lets me out! Why would anyone spend 100 million to get a job that pays $400,000 per year? You have it again, reelection, acquisition, money and power! If you really think these people give a damn about you, better check your medications--something is radically wrong! Politicians rule the country not the people! Every now and then an issue such as the Dubai ports deal crops up that unites the society and the politicians become terrified. Danger! Danger! Unified citizens could easily take control of the country. What a horrible thought! They might even vote for an honest Independent…YIKES! This scares the poop out of the politicians—if they are voted out their territory is lost and the cash connection is severed. Horrors—the Independents and moderates from both parties are united. What a nightmare! The extremists from both parties are exposed and the moderates are jumping ship! Shazam! All of a sudden the moderates and even some extremists are representing the people. At this point we are as close as we will ever get to the Democracy our “Founding Fathers” envisioned. Unfortunately, once the danger has passed the politicians climb back on their thrones, ignore the people, and resume the quest for reelection and cash. The only possible cure is to get a term limits law passed. A campaign time window also needs to be established. Three months of campaigning is sufficient for US Senators with two-term limit (12 years) and for Representatives a 3-month campaign window with a six-term limit (12 years). The only possible way to achieve this is to grandfather in the current Congressional members. Without this provision you would never get the needed votes. Presidential campaigns should be limited to 6 months. We need to find compromise positions and get rid of these slimy opportunistic leeches. This was the vision of the founders of our country, not continual gang warfare. I hate to say it but there are a few who perform their duties as was intended. Why do I hate to admit it? Because they all want to grab that badge, pin it over their heart, and display it everywhere. The truth is not in the majority!
